About us

Unst Cycle Hire was formed in 2012 to provide a fun and exciting way to see all that is available on our Island above all others. Unst is also fast becoming know as the activity Island of Shetland.

In October 2011 Unst became the first island to become a member of the Walkers are Welcome Communities of the United Kingdom. Unst Cycle Hire will fill a vital need in providing transport around the island to starting point of the walks and to visit all the wildlife locations.

Unst Cycle Hire provides a unique service for the Northern Isles and our assisted freedom to roam policy should provide a great cycle experience.

UCH would like you to enjoy Unst, Fetlar and North Yell during your time here and we recognise that not all our customers will be regular cyclists. If you would like help to get around ask us how we are able to help. We can also deliver bikes to you or collect them at the end of your holiday.

For a great Shetland experience why not use the Lerwick to Unst bus service to Unst, arriving in the morning and returning south late afternoon at the end of your holiday. As an alternative return by cycle from Unst to Lerwick and explor the eastside of Yell and then the westside of Shetland. UCH can arrange to collect up to three bikes for a small charge.

Safety & Service.

When each bike is returned it is cleaned, oiled and given a 20 point safety check on all aspects of the bikes function. A safety check sheet is then completed, signed and dated before the bike is placed in a rack awaiting its next collection.

With our kids bikes we can provide a whole family experience.

The Team

Whilst I will be taking the lead in respect of maintenance and service I have the full support of Aaron and Cassie Foord owners of Northbase Visitor Center & cafe. They provide administrative and bookings support on a daily basis.

Although I took early retirement in 2004 I keep myself fully active and whilst the bikes will keep me busy for about 8 hours each week for up to six months each year I still have lots of time walking my dogs on the amazing Unst walks, fishing, viewing wildlife and using my own bike to enjoy and fully appreciate my life on this amazing island.
